May Day weekend adventures

Diane Weber 04.30.2021

Spring is officially here and so are all the fun Spring eventsThis weekend marks the first day of May and it is going to be a good one! On top of the weather looking like it is going to be fantastic, the Des Moines Farmers Market is starting this weekend. Get ready for all your favorite vendors, and maybe get there a little early, because after a summer like 2020 the Farmer’s Market is bound to be busy.

But let’s start your May Day weekend with Friday evening activities. This Friday night at 7:30 the Des Moines Ballet is kicking off their Dance into Spring weekend tour at Lauridsen Amphitheater at Water Works Park in Des Moines. Make sure you bring your own seats or blankets so you’re nice and comfy (and socially distancing) while watching these exquisite dancers perform. If the ballet isn’t for you but you are still looking for an artistic event to attend this weekend, there is a weekend long Tattoo Convention being held at Hy Vee Hall. There will be all different kinds of artists from realistic to cosmetic and everywhere in between. Some artists do require an appointment, but there are also others with booths open for walk ups. There will be also be competitions, live music and glass blowing. Lastly, If you are looking for a way to spend some time outside but feeling like you need to get up and move around there is a Putt Putt at the Park this Friday and Saturday complete with ball park food and drink. There will even be live performances by Damon Dotson and Brian Congdon!

Start your Saturday off at The Farmers Market but make sure you are ready for the Best Buddies WalkThe Best Buddies walk is built around the need for inclusion for those of us with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the funding from the event goes toward inclusion in schools, housing, workplaces and provides a way to make connections between Buddies. The opening ceremonies will be held via the Facebook page at 11am, but then small groups will be encouraged to walk about in small groups. End your Saturday at the Make-A-Wish Gala. Starting at 6pm at the Ron Pearson Center,  Make-A-Wish Iowa is putting on their annual When Stars Align Gala complete with auctions and a mouth-watering dinner.

After a busy Saturday kick back and relax at Summerset Winery with some delicious wine and entertaining music. Bring all your snacks, meats and cheeses as well as some blankets to sit on while you enjoy the sunshine, wine and music. Enjoy this gorgeous spring weekend and be sure to check out a Jerry’s Homes Open House on Sunday from 1-4PM.
