Step

01

Find a Community

Before you build a house, you need to know where you want it to be. Jerry's Homes proudly builds throughout Des Moines and beyond so the only restriction should be your needs.

Search Communities

Community Tip

What goes into finding the perfect spot? Prioritize what's most important to you—available school district, commute, parks and public amenities—and go from there.

Step

02

Pick a Lot

You’ve got a location, now it’s time to get a little more specific. What kind of yard do you want? What do you want your windows to look out to? Is there room for the home you want? A lot goes into a lot.

Search Lots

Lot Tip

Make sure you know what kind of basement you want. Walkouts are increasingly popular but may not be for everyone. Do you need a full or a walk up? The lot will determine what kind of foundation we can pour.

Get Your Design On

You've got the outside, let's talk about the inside. The Century and Heritage Series are design packages for decorative elements of your new home. Take a look at the differences and decide what's best for you.

Step

05

Break Ground

Don’t worry, you don’t have to pick up a shovel. We’ll take it from here. You’ve made all the hard decisions, now it’s up to Jerry’s Homes to execute them. We start by prepping the lot and then pouring the footers and the foundation and framing the house. This process takes about five weeks.

Foundation Tip

Breaking ground can only be performed when the ground is thawed, so the winter months are not ideal to start a home. One of the benefits of having built homes in Iowa for generations is that Jerry's Homes knows how to best schedule our builds around Iowa weather.

Step

06

Plumbing, Electrical and HVAC

It’s time to fill your house with the things that make it work—wires, pipes, heating and cooling. Insulation, ductwork and drywall are installed during this phase as well. At this point, the house is considered “dried in,” complete with outlets, lights and switches.

Inspection Tip

At Jerry’s Homes, we understand that the home-building process can be stressful. Our time-tested process reduces that stress as much as possible, but it’s also important to remember that if you take a look at your house during the plumbing, electrical and HVAC phase, it might look more like a disaster area than a home. Don’t worry—this is temporary. Keep your eyes on the prize because soon the house will begin to look like you pictured it.

Make It Your Own

All the design decisions—paint color, countertops, trim styles—get installed inside and out. You’ll be able to see how your choices look in the real world and make any changes you see fit. From flooring to walkways, your home takes shape.

Building Tip

The home-building process is just that—a process. Things sometimes take longer than we’d like because of weather delays or other unforeseen circumstances. Try not to get discouraged. A house is a huge undertaking and might take months to complete depending on size and complications, but when it’s over, it’ll all be worth it.

Get Ready To Move In

As the house nears completion, there’s still time to change certain cosmetic aspects, but it’s now’s the time to get excited and start packing. When everything is settled, we do a final clean and then give you the keys. Welcome home, neighbor!
