Self-Care Tips
These long cold winter days can make it seem like time drags on and on. To alleviate this slow time of the year it might be a good idea to do a little "check in" with yourself. No, we're not just talking about massages and other forms of paid pampering, we're talking about Self-Care. A great definition of self-care is that it is the mindset, activities, practices and habits we use to lower stress, unhappiness, illness, depression and negative emotions. Why is self-care important? Taking time for yourself to heal the mind, body and soul - especially if you aren't find joy in the things you love. That's a sure sign that you need take time out and focus on yourself. Let's take a look at some self-care tips. Who knows, you'll find a new habit that serves a positive purpose in your life!
1. Turn off your phone
It might be hard to imagine the days when cell phones didn't exist (long time ago, right?) Whether you realize it or not, your phone can suck a lot of time and energy out of you without you even realizing it. If you find yourself checking messages, emails, news apps and social media more than 10 times daily, it might be time to tune your phone out for a bit and tune into yourself. Simply unplug from the demands of your phone - even if it's for an hour - and you'll notice the simple joy and pleasure in your surroundings. If you simple cannot be away from your phone, disengage from social media for a couple of days. A 2018 study by Melisa Hunt found a connection between frequent social media use and feelings of loneliness and depression, anxiety and poor sleep quality. Take this self-care tip seriously as your mental health is of the upmost importance.
2. Exercise
Ok, this self-care tip is an obvious one but let's really think about the benefits of exercising. We're not talking about training for a marathon, we're talking about moving your body in some way, even just for 10 minutes a day. Lift weights while you watch TV, take a walk over your lunch hour or start practicing yoga. Improve your mood, sleep, and stress levels by picking an physical activity or exercise routine that you enjoy. If you struggle to find time or motivation, consider finding a friend to join you, exercise in short bursts and set some realistic goals. Think of exercise as "meditation in motion" and know that you are not only benefiting your body but your mind as well.
3. De-clutter
Take a little time (maybe on a free weekend) to clean up. Maybe go through that pile of mail on the counter, put the dishes away or even re-arrange your furniture. Donate clothes, books, and shoes to a shelter and recycle old papers. Make extra room in your garage for a new power tool or bike you've been wanting. Try something new in your living room. Rearrange all of your furniture in a way that makes you more comfortable. When your home “looks” new, you'll gain confidence and proud of your new home design skills. Even something as simple as making your bed each morning will help improve your frame of mind and start your day off on a positive note!
4. Pamper yourself...with therapy
Ok, here's where the massage comes in. Yes, pampering yourself with a massage or hot bath is always nice but what about pampering yourself with a little therapy. Think of therapy as a way to incorporate mindfulness and healing into your life. Support groups are available and can still provide an outlet to discuss important issues in your life if a therapist is too difficult to schedule or pay for. Consider acupuncture or the practice of Reiki. According to Live Science, Reiki is a therapy often described as palm healing or hands-on-body healing in which a practitioner places hands lightly on or over a patient's body to facilitate the patient's process of healing. Maybe you just need a little time to breathe or meditate and that is your therapy. Don't be afraid to try something new!
Self-care is about giving yourself relief when we feel overwhelmed. It's about addressing your problems holistically. Listen to what your mind, body, and soul needs and seek out activities that ultimately enhance your life - one day at a time.
